Rangers’ top prospect hurt

- Sun-Times wires

Rangers top prospect Josh Jung is set for surgery on a stress fracture in his left foot, and the third baseman is likely to miss about two months.

Jung was the eighth overall pick in the 2019 draft out of Texas Tech and was expected to start the season in the minor leagues.

President of baseball operations Jon Daniels said Saturday the delayed start of the minor-league season could limit the time Jung misses. The Class AAA season is tentatively set to start in early May, followed by the lower levels. Jung has never played above low Class A.

Pirates’ Brault leaves with tightness

Pirates left-hander Steven Brault left his outing Friday after two innings with tightness in his left arm and is day-to-day. The team said that Brault’s issue was with his latissimus muscle, rather than any forearm or elbow tightness.

Brault is projected for one of the top spots in the rotation. He had a 3.38 ERA in 42⅔ innings for the Pirates last season, allowing only two home runs and limiting hard contact.

Rockies turn to Owings to help at 2B

The Rockies appear to have a plan set to replace second baseman Brendan Rodgers, who will miss at least a month with a strained hamstring. They selected the contract of utilityman Chris Owings, who can play second base, third base, shortstop and the outfield.

The team also picked up the contract of C.J. Cron, who’s in line to start at first base. Cron is playing for his fifth team in as many seasons.
