QB Book plucked by Saints
Notre Dame’s Ian Book was the bestknown collegian selected Saturday on the third day of the NFL Draft in Cleveland. He went to a team with a QB opening: The Saints, who saw career passing leader Drew
Brees retire.
That doesn’t mean Book, the winningest quarterback in Notre Dame history, will be stepping in to the starting lineup in the Big Easy. Indeed, he’s more likely to be a developmental project behind Taysom Hill and Jameis Winston.
“It’s coach [Sean] Payton and the offense there, and it’s huge that Drew Brees was there,” said Book, who went in the fourth round, 133rd overall, and was the ninth quarterback drafted. “I feel like I fit in that system well.”
Other Irish players picked were defensive end Adetokunbo Ogundeji by the Falcons in the fifth round and wideout Ben Skowronek (fifth) by the Rams, who also drafted Northwestern defensive end Earnest Brown
(fifth). Illinois cornerback Nate Hobbs went to Raiders in the fifth round.
GOLF Burns, Bradley tied at top after three
Sam Burns had a three-shot lead with five holes to play and had to make an 8-foot bogey putt on the 18th hole to keep a share of the lead with Keegan Bradley in the Valspar Championship in Palm Harbor, Florida. Burns, who took two bogeys over the final three holes, had to two-putt from 75 feet on the final hole for bogey and a 2-under 69. Bradley, who chipped in for an eagle, also bogeyed the 18th for a 69.
MISCELLANEOUS Wild snap Wolves’ three-game streak
Playing their sixth game in eight days, the Wolves lost to the Wild 5-2 at the Wolves Training Facility. Dominik Bokk and David Gust scored for the Central Division-leading Wolves (18-6-1-2), who saw their three-game winning streak come to an end. The Wild outshot the Wolves 48-27 in a game in which the teams combined for 102 penalty minutes.
