Mets exec Scott doubts tale about dugout critter

-

Mets acting general manager Zack Scott wasn’t thrilled by Francisco Lindor’s fuzzy explanation for a dugout dispute Friday night.

Scott said Saturday it was “unfortunate” that Lindor and teammate Jeff McNeil attempted to dismiss their dust-up by bizarrely claiming they were arguing over a critter spotted in the clubhouse tunnel — Lindor said it was a rat, McNeil’s story was that it was a raccoon or possum.

The disagreement happened out of view of TV cameras, but the Mets’ broadcast showed players and coaches rushing into the tunnel to break up some sort of commotion.

“You’d have to ask the players why they chose to handle it that way,” Scott said. “Not how I’d go [about it]. What’s unfortunate is it’s a little bit of a bigger story than it needs to be and it takes away from one of our best wins of the year.”

Lindor homered a half-inning after the exchange, keying a 5-4, 10-inning victory over the Diamondbacks.

† McNeil and Lindor teamed to produce all four runs as the host Mets beat the Diamondbacks 4-2. McNeil cracked a two-run homer in the third, and Lindor had a double and an RBI and scored on a throwing error after a stolen base.

Yankees 4, Nationals 3 (11)

Gleyber Torres’ tying single in the ninth inning and his winning infield single in the 11th helped host New York overcome Max Scherzer’s commanding 14-strikeout performance to beat Washington.

Scherzer allowed two hits in 7„ innings, but the Yankees rallied three times. It was Scherzer’s 100th game with 10 or more strikeouts — Nolan Ryan, Randy Johnson, Roger Clemens and Pedro Martinez are the only other pitchers to accomplish the feat.

Blue Jays 8, Astros 4

Cavan Biggio hit his first homer at Minute Maid Park, where his father, Hall of Famer Craig Biggio, made so many memories to help Toronto beat Houston. Biggio hit a tworun shot off Cristian Javier with one out in the second inning to make it 2-0. Biggio was 5-for-15 with two doubles but no homers at the ballpark before Saturday.

Cardinals 9, Rockies 8

Yadier Molina drove in three runs in his return from the injured list, Paul Goldschmidt homered and host St. Louis edged Colorado. Goldschmidt also had three RBI and Nolan Arenado doubled against his former team. The Cardinals have won eight straight and 14 of 15 games against the Rockies at Busch Stadium.

Tigers 7, Twins 3

Slumping Miguel Cabrera hit a tiebreaking single to key a five-run burst in the seventh that sent Detroit over visiting Minnesota. Cabrera had two hits, raising his average to .149. The longtime star now has 2,876 hits, tied with Mel Ott for 44th on the all-time list.

Brewers 6, Marlins 2

Adrian Houser struck out 10 in six innings and homered off Daniel Castano for the second time this season, and visiting Milwaukee snapped a six-game losing streak..
