Jags’ Lawrence takes it easy

Trevor Lawrence opened the Jaguars’ rookie minicamp on a pitch count. Coaches and teammates were essentiall­y given an even stricter rule regarding the No. 1 pick and franchise quarterbac­k: Don’t touch him.

Lawrence is three months removed from labrum surgery on his left, non-throwing shoulder. The cartilage has healed enough to practice, but the Jaguars are taking precaution­s to make sure the former Clemson star doesn’t do any damage while he fully recovers. He is expected to be full go before training camp in late July.

“The No. 1 issue is falling,” coach Urban Meyer said Saturday. “He can’t hand off right now. He can’t take a direct snap from under center. We’re just worried about any chance of that arm getting jammed right now . . . . We can’t have [him] on the ground. That’s the biggest thing: We’ve got to keep people away from him.”

Report: Ex-Bronco James eyes grievance

ESPN reported offensive tackle Ja’Wuan James, who was cut Friday, by the Broncos, is looking info filing a grievance aimed at securing his 2021 salary after tearing his ACL away from the team facility.

James’ grievance through the NFL Players Associatio­n could be for more than $10 million in lost wages after the Broncos said his injury was not football-related because it occurred away from the team facility.

Panthers’ Horn picks No. 8 for Kobe

When Panthers first-round draft pick Jaycee Horn learned the NFL would let cornerback­s wear single-digit numbers this season, his jersey choice was easy. He selected No. 8 to honor his childhood hero, Kobe Bryant.

“Kobe has always been my favorite athlete,” said Horn, the eighth overall pick.

Packers add another quarterbac­k

With Aaron Rodgers’ status uncertain, the Packers added quarterbac­k Kurt Benkert, ESPN reported, citing Benkert’s Instagram post showing him signing a contract. Benkert was released by the Falcons in February.
