Padres-Nationals halted by shooting

-

The game between the Padres and Nationals was suspended in the sixth inning Saturday night after police said there was a shooting outside Nationals Park in Washington.

Two people were shot, according to a Metropolitan Police Department spokesman. Investigators believe, based on preliminary information, that one of the victims was an employee at the stadium. Washington police later tweeted that “two additional victims associated with this incident walked into area hospitals for treatment of gunshot wounds.”

More than two dozen police cars, ambulances and fire engines were on the street outside the thirdbase side of the stadium and a police helicopter hovered overhead. The Padres had taken the field for the bottom of the sixth when several loud pops were heard from the left-field side of the ballpark.

The Padres led 8-4 when the game was halted. It will be resumed Sunday, followed by the regularly scheduled game.

Pirates 9, Mets 7

Jacob Stallings’ walk-off grand slam in the ninth inning off closer Edwin Diaz rallied the Pirates, who trailed 6-0 and scored all of their runs in the final two innings — five in the eighth and four in the ninth.

J.D. Davis hit a pair of two-run homers for the Mets in his first start since coming off the 60-day injured list, and rookie starter Tylor Megill pitched six scoreless innings.

But it wasn’t enough on a miserable day for the Mets, who detailed injuries to shortstop Francisco Lindor and ace Jacob deGrom before the game. Lindor is out indefinitely with a strained oblique, and deGrom is sidelined with forearm tightness.

Braves 9, Rays 0

Joc Pederson hit a two-run homer in his first start with the Braves, and Max Fried had a tworun double among three hits while throwing seven dominant innings. Pederson, acquired in a trade with the Cubs on Thursday, hit leadoff and started in right field, filling roles held by Ronald Acuna Jr. before his season-ending knee injury on July 10.

Cardinals 3, Giants 1

Kwang Hyun Kim tossed six scoreless innings and Tyler O’Neill and Paul Goldschmidt homered for the host Cardinals. Kim has not allowed a run in his last 21 innings, covering three starts. The South Koreanborn lefty was pitching in front of his wife and two children for the first time in the United States.

Indians 3, Athletics 2

Franmil Reyes hit his 15th home run into a luxury suite in center field and Cal Quantrill threw five effective innings for the visiting Indians. Reyes’ homer traveled a projected 437 feet into an open window of a suite where a handful of fans were sitting.
