NU shocks No. 10 Mich. State

-

Ryan Young — starting in place of injured Pete Nance (ankle) — scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds, and Northwestern held on to beat No. 10 Michigan State 64-62 on Saturday in East Lansing, Michigan, for its first road victory against a top-10 team in nearly five years.

The Wildcats (9-6, 2-4 Big Ten) ended a four-game losing streak when the Spartans’ Malik Hall missed a three-pointer with four seconds left and Michigan State’s Marcus Bingham missed the front end of a one-andone with seven-tenths of a second to play.

‘‘We matched their physicality and toughness, which was a big key in winning,’’ NU coach Chris Collins said. ‘‘This was a really important win for us after what we’ve been through, feeling like we were on the doorstep in three of those four games [during the skid].’’

Chase Audige added 14 points and Boo Buie 12 for the Wildcats, whose last road victory against a top-10 team was Feb. 12, 2017, against No. 7 Wisconsin.

Julius Marble scored a career-high 18 points and Hall and Gabe Brown 10 each for the Spartans (14-3, 5-1), whose nine-game winning streak was broken. Star freshman Max Christie, who played at Rolling Meadows, was 1-for-8 from the field and scored only six points for Michigan State.

‘‘They played harder, better,’’ Spartans coach Tom Izzo said.
