Long hitter DeChambeau tells his critics to ‘chill’

- Sun-Times wires

Bryson DeChambeau told those concerned that his body is breaking down from relentless speed training and excessive workouts in his ongoing quest for distance to “chill.”

DeChambeau had withdrawn from the Saudi International before the second round because of injuries to his left hand and left hip. He shot 3-over 73 in the first round.

“Everyone needs to chill,” DeChambeau, 28, wrote Saturday on his Instagram account. “Yes, I hurt myself but not from hitting it far. I slipped and fell this week on Tuesday unfortunately. I know people probably [won’t] believe me, but that is the truth. I will be back stronger and better than ever in a few weeks. Thank you for your concerns and keep hitting bombs!! I will be back.”

† A 9-under 63 left Jordan Spieth one shot behind a trio at the top of the leaderboard after three rounds of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in California. Spieth’s day was highlighted by a shot he hit on the eighth hole with precarious footing near a 60-foot drop off the cliff onto the ocean rocks below.

“That was by far the most nerve-wracking shot I’ve ever hit in my life,” Spieth said to caddie Michael Greller after his shot with a 7-iron went just left of the green.

† Leona Maguire became the first Irish winner in LPGA Tour history, closing with a 5-under 67 for a three-stroke victory in the LPGA Drive On Championship at Crown Colony in Fort Myers, Florida.
