Velasquez gives up 3 HRs

-

Vince Velasquez’s second start of the spring was much worse (three home runs allowed) than his first. Shohei Ohtani homered on the first pitch, a curveball, and Jo Adell also took Velasquez deep in the first inning.

With his pitch count climbing, Velasquez needed relief help from Jhan Marinez to finish the inning. He then re-entered, and Brandon Marsh homered against him in the third.

Velasquez had pitched two scoreless innings against the Rockies four days earlier.

‘‘I still have a lot of work to do to earn [a starting] role, knowing there has been a lot of ups and downs in my career,’’ said Velasquez, who signed a one-year, $3 million deal.

Closer Liam Hendriks yielded a homer to Matt Duffy. He allowed two hits and a walk in one inning. Jhan more time with Sox

If Marinez’s name rings a bell, it’s because he was traded to the Sox as compensation for the Marlins’ hiring of manager Ozzie Guillen in 2011. Marinez, 33, has pitched in seven organizations with 103 major-league appearances. He signed a minor-league contract this month to return to the Sox.

Abreu, Robert go deep

Jose Abreu and Luis Robert hit their first spring homers back-to-back against Cesar Valdez, who started instead of Ohtani. The reigning American League MVP was supposed to start but opted to rest and pitch one more time Thursday before the season opener.

‘‘The most important thing right now is I’m feeling good,’’ Abreu said. ‘‘My focus right now is to stay healthy and get my body in rhythm.’’
