Tigers’ Cabrera is 33rd to 3,000 hits
Tigers star Miguel Cabrera delivered the 3,000th hit of his decorated career Saturday, becoming the 33rd major-leaguer to accomplish the feat.
Cabrera made history by grounding an oppositefield single to right through the shift in the first inning of the Tigers’ 13-0 win over the Rockies in the first game of a doubleheader.
Cabrera immediately raised his right arm as he headed toward first base. The crowd of 37,566 at Comerica Park gave him a rousing ovation and chanted “Miggy! Miggy!” while fireworks were shot off from beyond the center-field fence.
“I was like, ‘Get it done today,’ ” Cabrera said. “I’m happy I hit it here. I’m happy for the people of Detroit to see it. Hopefully I can get more hits here.”
Yankees fans shower Guardians with debris
Some fans in the notoriously rowdy right-field bleachers at Yankee Stadium pelted Guardians outfielders with bottles, cans and debris in a chaotic scene moments after New York rallied for a 6-5 win.
Rather than celebrating after Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Gleyber Torres got RBI hits with two outs in the ninth, Yankees players rushed toward the wall in right-center field, trying to calm the crowd.
Guardians right fielder Oscar Mercado said fans were celebrating when Cleveland left fielder Steven Kwan was hurt chasing Kiner-Falefa’s hit. Before play resumed, Mercado pointed at the stands and center fielder Myles Straw climbed the chain-link fence in left to confront at least one fan face-to-face.
Rays no-hit Red Sox through nine, win in 10th
Kevin Kiermaier capped Tampa Bay’s three-run 10th inning with a game-ending homer, and the Rays beat the Red Sox 3-2 after losing their bid for a combined no-hitter in the top of the inning.
The Rays’ J.P. Feyereisen, Javy Guerra, Jeffrey Springs, Jason Adam, Ryan Thompson and Andrew Kittredge combined to hold the Red Sox hitless through nine innings.
