Irish lose WR Davis; QB Buchner to start

- Sun-Times wires

Notre Dame receiver Avery Davis will miss the season after tearing a ligament in his right knee, and the Fighting Irish on Saturday named Tyler Buchner as the starting quarterback in their opener against Ohio State on Sept. 3.

Davis, a senior and team captain who was penciled in to start at slot receiver, was injured during practice Friday. Davis missed the final month of last season after tearing the ACL in his left knee but was still third on the team in yards receiving with 386 on 27 catches.

Buchner played in 10 games last season, mostly as a backup, and threw for 298 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions last season. He also ran for 336 yards and three scores.

Spaun leads, Smith looms

J.J. Spaun did just enough right at the end to fashion a 2-under 68 and keep his one-shot lead in the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis, Tennessee, with Cameron Smith lurking.

Enjoying a banner year with his first major at the British Open, and under scrutiny for reports that he is headed to Saudifunded LIV Golf, Smith birdied his last hole for a 67 that left him two shots behind. Sepp Straka carded a 68 that had him one shot off of the lead.

† Wyatt Kaiser and Carter Mazur each scored twice as the U.S. beat winless Austria 7-0 to improve to 3-0 in group play in the world junior hockey championship in Edmonton, Alberta.

† Simona Halep advanced to the National Bank Open’s final in Toronto, beating American Jessica Pegula 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
