August “Augie” J. Barberi, age 109, passed August 27, 2022, one month shy of his 110 th birthday. He was preceded in death by his parents, August Sr. and Anna Barberi (nee Cella); his beloved wife of 57 years, Ida Barberi (nee Caldarone); his brother Charles (Esther) Barberi, sisters Rose (Pat) Bramanti, Julie (Louis) Simonetti, and Marie (Cosmo) Primavera; and longtime companion Margaret DeRosa. He is survived by his loving sons Raymond (Carol) and Robert (Christine) Barberi; cherished grandchild­ren Lisa, Scott (Lori) and Brian Barberi, and Tracy (Joseph) Sorce; dear great-grandchild­ren Brittany Sowacke, Nick and Mike Barberi, Marco, Julia and Ava Sorce. Augie was a lifelong resident of South Chicago Heights, Illinois. In 1915, his family moved into a home that his father built. Then in 1952, he built his own home for his family on the adjoining lot. He retired from General Electric Company in 1975. Over the years, Augie was very active in church activities and belonged to many social clubs in Chicago Heights, South Chicago Heights and Bloom Township. He was also a big sports fan, always rooting for his two favorite teams, the Chicago White Sox and the University of Notre Dame football team. Summers would find him tending to his vegetable garden. He was still canning tomatoes from his garden and making his own pasta sauce when he was 100. In 2007, he was the Grand Marshall for the South Chicago Heights centennial celebratio­n. After living on the same street for almost 100 years, it was named Honorary August Barberi Way in 2013. Visitation will be September 6, 2022, from 3:00-8:00pm at Panozzo Brothers Funeral Home, 530 West 14 th Street (U.S. Route 30, 3 blocks east of Western Avenue), Chicago Heights. Funeral mass September 7, 2022, at 10:30am at St. Liborius Church, 71 West 35 th Street,Steger. Entombment at Assumption Cemetery in Glenwood.
