Former A’s star Bando dies at 78

Sal Bando, a three-time World Series-winning third baseman with the Athletics and a former Brewers executive, has died. He was 78.

According to a statement from his family, Bando died late Friday in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin. The family said Bando lost a battle with cancer that began more than five years ago.

Bando hit .254 with 242 home runs and 1,039 RBI in 16 seasons with the Athletics (1966-76) and Brewers (1977-81). He was a four-time All-Star who won three consecutiv­e World Series titles with the A’s in 1972-74.

Bando joined the Brewers’ front office after his playing career ended and served as their general manager from October 1991 to August 1999.

No. 7 Gauff, No. 1 Swiatek bounced from Aussie

Seventh-seeded Coco Gauff was beaten 7-5, 6-3 by 2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko in the fourth round of the Australian Open in Melbourne. Earlier, reigning Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina became the first player to reach the quarterfin­als by upsetting top-seeded Iga Swiatek 6-4, 6-4.

On the men’s side, Fourth-seeded Novak Djokovic continued his quest for his 10th Australian Open title — and his record-tying 22nd Grand Slam singles crown overall — by defeating Grigor Dimitrov 7-6 (9-7), 6-3, 6-4 in the third round.

Among the other third-round winners were Tommy Paul, J.J. Wolf and Ben Shelton, which gave the United States four men’s players among the final 16 in the tournament for the first time since 2004. Sebastian Korda had reached the round of 16 a day earlier.

Rockets’ losing streak reaches 13

Anthony Edwards scored a season-high 44 points that included seven three-pointers, and the Timberwolv­es handed the Rockets their 13th consecutiv­e loss with a 113-104 victory. The Rockets’ skid is the longest in the NBA this season.

Jon Rahm shot a 7-under-par 65 and Davis Thompson a 5-under 67 to share a four-stroke lead after three rounds of the American Express in La Quinta, California. Both completed 54 holes at 23-under 193.

Jamieson Rees scored two goals, William Lagesson had three assists and the Wolves (14-18-3-1) scored four times in the third period to roll to a 6-2 victory against the IceHogs in Rockford.

Mikaela Shiffrin stayed tied with former U.S. teammate Lindsey Vonn for the most World Cup victories by a woman at 82 after finishing seventh in a downhill in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy.
