Illinois extends hex vs. Wisconsin

-

Marcus Domask scored 31 points, Terrence Shannon Jr. added 23 and No. 13 Illinois continued its recent mastery of Wisconsin with a 91-83 victory Saturday in Madison, Wisconsin.

The Illini (22-7, 13-5 Big Ten) have won their last six games against the Badgers (18-11, 10-8), which represents their longest winning streak in the series since beating them 16 consecutive times in 1981-89. Wisconsin had beaten Illinois 15 times in a row before this stretch.

The Illini also became the first visiting team to win four consecutive games at the Kohl Center, which has served as the Badgers’ home arena since 1998.

After Wisconsin’s John Blackwell sank a three-pointer to tie the score at 68 with 5:44 left, Domask scored six points during a 13-3 burst that enabled Illinois to seize control. Domask, who went to high school about 60 miles northeast of Madison and had friends and relatives in the stands, started the spurt with a basket that put the Illini ahead for good with 5:25 left.

‘‘There were a lot of people that put on an Illinois shirt for the first time today,’’ Domask said after the game. ‘‘And they told me that they loved the game, but they’re never putting it on again.’’

Tyler Wahl scored 20 points to lead the Badgers, who have lost seven of their last nine games since rising to No. 6 in the country.

Wisconsin honored former guard and assistant coach Howard Moore in a pregame ceremony. Moore, who was the coach at UIC in 2010-15, was making his first public appearance at the Kohl Center since a car wreck in May 2019 killed his wife and daughter and left him and his son seriously injured. Former Badgers teammate Rashard Griffith rolled him onto the court in a wheelchair.

‘‘I’d just like to say from the bottom of my heart, thank you,’’ son Jerell Moore said. ‘‘You have made this journey for me and my family so much easier and so much more powerful for us to move on and to keep going forward.’’

Iowa 87, Northwestern 80

Boo Buie made six three-pointers and scored 27 points to go with seven assists, but the Wildcats (20-9, 11-7 Big Ten) fell to the hotshooting Hawkeyes (18-12, 10-9) at Welsh-Ryan Arena.

Josh Dix scored 24 points and Payton Sandfort 23 for Iowa, which shot 55% from the field and finished with 25 assists on 33 field goals. Tony Perkins had 14 of those assists.

Brooks Barnhizer added 20 points, Nick Martinelli 17 and Blake Smith 11 for Northwestern, which retired the first jersey in its history during a halftime ceremony.

The Wildcats honored Billy McKinney by lifting his No. 30 into the rafters. McKinney, a 6-foot point guard, played at Northwestern in 1973-77 and finished as the Wildcats’ all-time leading scorer with 1,900 career points, a mark that would stand for 35 years.

Butler 82, DePaul 63

Jaden Henley scored 15 points, Jalen Terry 14 and Elijah Fisher 12, but the Blue Demons (3-26, 0-18 Big East) lost their 17th consecutive game by falling to the Bulldogs (1713, 8-11) at Wintrust Arena.

DePaul hasn’t won since beating Chicago State on Dec. 30 and fell to 0-11 under interim coach Matt Brady, who took over when Tony Stubblefield was fired Jan. 22.

Purdue 80, Michigan State 74

Zach Edey scored 32 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, and the No. 2 Boilermakers (26-3, 15-3 Big Ten) clinched at least a share of the Big Ten regular-season title by defeating the Spartans (17-12, 9-9) in West Lafayette, Indiana. Tyson Walker led Michigan State with 14 points.

Minnesota 75, Penn State 70

Former Rolling Meadows star Cam Christie scored 19 points, and the host Golden Gophers (18-11, 9-9 Big Ten) rallied from a 23-point deficit in the first half to defeat the Nittany Lions (14-16, 8-11). Puff Johnson led Penn State with 19 points.
