Braves ace Strider done for season

-

Braves ace Spencer Strider will miss the rest of the season after having Tommy John surgery to repair the ulnar collateral ligament in his right (throwing) elbow, the team said Saturday.

Dr. Keith Meister performed the procedure Friday in Arlington, Texas, using an internal brace to repair the ligament. The procedure has a typical rehab period of 12 to 18 months.

Strider complained about discomfort in the elbow after pitching four innings April 5 against the Diamondbacks. An MRI exam the next day revealed damage to his UCL, and the Braves prepared for the worst.

Strider was 20-5 with a 3.86 ERA and a majorleague-leading 281 strikeouts last season.

On the field

Jake Bauers hit a tiebreaking three-run home run in the fourth inning, and five Brewers relievers combined for 5‰ scoreless innings in an 11-5 victory against the host Orioles. The Brewers have scored seven or more runs in their last six games, tying a franchise record set in 1982 and matched in 1989.

♦Third baseman Zach McKinstry committed a three-run error, then served up a three-run homer to Matt Wallner in a span of three batters in a seven-run 12th inning that carried the visiting Twins past the Tigers 11-5 in Game 1 of a doubleheader. The Twins completed the sweep with a 4-1 victory in Game 2.

♦ The Yankees swept a doubleheader from the host Guardians, winning the first game 3-2 and the second 8-2, to improve their major-league-best record to 12-3. Juan Soto hit a three-run homer to fuel the Yankees in Game 2.

♦Nick Castellanos hit a walk-off single with the bases loaded in the ninth inning to lift the Phillies past the visiting Pirates 4-3.

♦ Salvador Perez hit his 250th career homer and drove in four runs, Bobby Witt Jr. scored four times and the Royals outslugged the host Mets 11-7.

This and that

The Rangers put left-handed reliever Brock Burke on the 15-day injured list with a broken right hand suffered when he punched a wall after a bad outing Friday against the Astros. Burke allowed four runs and three hits in two-thirds of an inning, raising his ERA to 15.00.

♦ Rockies outfielder Kris Bryant left the team’s game against the Blue Jays with soreness in his ribs and back after crashing into the wall to make a catch on a deep fly by Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Manager Bud Black said he didn’t expect Bryant to miss significant time.

♦ The Twins put shortstop Carlos Correa on the 10-day injured list after he suffered a strained oblique Friday against the Tigers.
