Teammates don’t call out Jordan for diving

- BY DARYL VAN SCHOUWEN dvanschouwen@suntimes.com

LOS ANGELES — Nobody in the White Sox clubhouse faulted rookie left fielder Jordan Danks for trying to make a diving catch.

Danks, considered the best defensive outfielder in the organization, gambled and lost on Tony Gwynn Jr.’s liner that skipped past him to the wall for a triple in the 10th inning. One out later, Dee Gordon singled to left to score Gwynn and hand the Sox a tough 2-1 loss.

“Jordan trying to make a diving play out there, that’s how you make mistakes — full bore,” catcher Tyler Flowers said. “It’s better than being the other way and letting it eat you up because you’re sitting back. That’s what we like. Be aggressive.”

Danks could have held back and caught the ball on a hop for a single with one out.

“The killer instinct in me said, ‘You can catch that ball,’ ” Danks said. “I just came up short.”

Ventura’s decision

California kid Addison Reed, pitching in front of family and friends among a sellout crowd, blew his first save opportunity in nine chances.

Reed, who earned the save in the Sox’ 5-4 victory Saturday, entered after Jose Quintana pitched eight scoreless innings and with the Sox leading 1-0. Reed gave up singles to Bobby Abreu and Elian Herrera and a sacrifice fly by Juan Rivera to right fielder Alex Rios.

Manager Robin Ventura said he went to Reed because that’s his job as the closer.

“It’s what Reeder does,’’ he said. “We have a lot more games to go with Q, and he pitched great. But right there we went to the closer.’’

Going the other way

Paul Konerko, who leads the American League in batting average and on-base percentage and is second in on-base-plusslugging, arguably is a better hitter than ever at 36. As he did the last two seasons, he continues to pile up hits to right field.

“He’s staying inside the ball balance-wise and taking the ball the other way if that’s all they’re going to give them,” Ventura said. “He doesn’t get selfish and try to hook everything.”

Asked if he sees Konerko as a Hall of Famer, Ventura said he hasn’t crunched the numbers.

“I’m just going to say yes,’’ he said.

This and that

The Sox caught a break when Matt Treanor left third base early tagging up on a fly ball in the sixth. Dodgers manager Don Mattingly was ejected for arguing, his fourth ejection of the season.

John Danks will have an MRI exam and visit team doctor Gregory Nicholson on Monday.

First-round draft pick Courtney Hawkins will be introduced Monday at U.S. Cellular Field.
