Spurs aide Vaughn Magic’s new coach

The Orlando Magic hired Jacque Vaughn as its next head coach Saturday. He will be formally introduced at a news conference Monday.

Vaughn, 37, becomes the 10th coach in team history and replaces Stan Van Gundy, who was fired in May despite compiling a 259-135 regularsea­son record, a franchiseb­est .657 winning percentage and a 31-28 playoff record.

‘‘As we navigated through our coaching search, we quickly saw that Jacque’s spirit and leadership strengths made him the clear choice,’’ general manager Rob Hennigan said in a statement. ‘‘We are confident that his diligence, attention to detail and communicat­ion style will help establish the bedrock of our culture moving forward. His commitment and passion to building a sustainabl­e program will help steer our organizati­on for years to come.’’

Hennigan chose Vaughn from a pool of finalists that also included Phoenix Suns developmen­t coach Lindsey Hunter and former Detroit Pistons coach Michael Curry.

A 12-year NBA player before retiring in 2009, Vaughn’s career included 80 games with the Magic in 2002-03. He never has been a head coach, but he has spent the last two seasons as an assistant to Gregg Popovich with the San Antonio Spurs. ing last season, is holding out in hopes of getting the Jaguars to renegotiat­e his contract. He has two years left on a five-year, $31 million deal.

The Miami Dolphins agreed to terms with rookie quarterbac­k Ryan Tannehill on a four-year contract. Financial terms of the deal weren’t disclosed.

Tannehill, whom the Dolphins selected with the eighth overall pick in April out of Texas A&M, is expected to be at practice Sunday.

Bit of history for Garrigus

Robert Garrigus shot a 6-under-par 64 to open a one-stroke lead over William McGirt after the third round of the Canadian Open in Ancaster, Ontario. Garrigus’ score of 16-under 194 was a 54-hole record for the tournament, one shot better than Arnold Palmer in 1955 and Dean Wilson in 2010.

Bernhard Langer shot a 4-under 66 to take a onestroke lead over Fred Couples, who shot a 6-under 64, into the final round of the Senior British Open in Turnberry, Scotland. Langer finished 54 holes at 7-under 203.

Inbee Park shot a 2-under 70 to join Stacy Lewis, who shot a 1-over 73, atop the leaderbaor­d after the third round of the Evian Masters in Paris. Both completed 54 holes at 11-under 205.
