Robin praises Jake’s leadership

Chris Sale is the ace of the White Sox’ staff. And Jake Peavy is the veteran leader.

Sale is the 23-year-old Cy Young candidate, Peavy the 31-year-old former Cy guy and veteran presence who made sure the Sox won an important game on Wednesday after getting thrashed the night before.

“That’s one of those things he’s a natural at doing,’’ manager Robin Ventura said of Peavy the leader. “As far as the outcomes of how things go, who knows how that’s going to go, but I like what he does as far as taking on that leadership and being responsible for what’s going on out there.

‘‘He has everybody accountable.”

Peavy (10-10) gave up one run, five hits and one walk. Two years removed from major surgery, he feels healthy again but is fighting normal wear and tear in this September pennant push.

“You’ve played the full season, and you don’t feel like it’s April,’’ Peavy said after throwing 107 pitches. “But when you’re playing meaningful games, you talk about the importance of taking care of yourself at this point. Make sure you’re getting your rest and getting treatment in the training room and staying on top of your body. This team’s got a lot left, and we’ll grind it out.

“We won’t be satisfied unless we make these next 26 games count and find a way to play October baseball.’’
