New member replaces ousted state rep

- Brian Stanley

The Illinois House has a new member.

The replacement chosen to fill the seat left vacant after former Rep. Derrick Smith was expelled by lawmakers has been sworn in.

Eddie Winters is a cop who was chosen by Democratic leaders to fill the seat until the winner of the November election takes office. Democratic officials in Chicago say he was sworn in Sunday. He’ll represent the 10th legislative district, which includes parts of Chicago’s West Side.

Smith remains on the ballot and could get his seat back, despite the expulsion and pressure from fellow Democrats to step aside.

Smith faces federal charges. Prosecutors allege he took a bribe to write what he thought was a letter of support for a day care center’s state grant application. He’s pleaded not guilty. a hospital.

The crash happened about 12:08 p.m. in the 2400 block of Kennedy Avenue, which is not far from a Kansasville fire station, Franks said.

“Our rescue crews heard and felt the explosion,” Franks said, adding that the department began receiving calls of an aircraft crash.

When the crews arrived at the scene, they found a small airplane had crashed, Franks said. A fire destroyed the plane, a garage and two cars, Franks said, and two homes and some outdoor sheds were damaged.

Firefighters were able to put out the blaze.

“I love fests, I go to them all summer, but there’s more here for the kids,” said Jim Tyszko, of Orland Park.

Tyszko and his wife, Elizabeth, were invited by their granddaughter Abbey, 4, and her parents, Joe and Becky Tyszko, of New Lenox.

“We come every year because this is a nice little thing,” Becky Tyszko said. “It’s not a carnival so there’s [an appeal] for everybody.”

Abbey made a sun visor with her name on it before dancing near the bandstand with her father and grandfather. Junes Got the Cash — a Johnny Cash and June Carter tribute group — were the featured performers Sunday.
