THE SCOWLEYS Savannah State is in the money

- BY JOE COWLEY jcowley@suntimes.com

So what’s the price of player safety at the college level these days? Well, it’s obviously less than $860,000. That was the total takehome purse for Savannah State the last two weeks after playing at Oklahoma State in Week 1 and at No. 5 Florida State on Saturday.

What a great experience for the kids from the FCS school. There are great lessons to be learned in being outscored 139-0 through two games. The Tigers lost 84-0 to the Cowboys and trailed the Seminoles 55-0 before the game was called with 8:59 left in the third quarter because of lightning. Even Mother Nature had seen enough.

“It would be really good for my perspective at Savannah if those two teams play for the national championship and you guys call me for my evaluation of the game because I’m the only one who has seen them both,” Savannah State coach Steve Davenport said. “But like I said before, it’s really a helpless feeling.”

The Savannah State athletic department can sleep well at night knowing it made a chunk of its $5.1 million budget.

Thank you, Penn State kicker Sam Ficken. Thank you.

Here is the list of Big Ten teams still eligible to hold up the national championship crystal at the end of the season: Michigan State, Indiana, Northwestern and Minnesota. Great showing, Big Ten. Again.

Congrats to Arkansas. With the stunning loss to LouisianaMonroe, the Razorbacks took the second-largest fall in the polls, going from No. 8 to unranked. Michigan still holds the record for biggest fall, dropping from No. 5 to out after losing to Appalachian State in 2007. There’s a reason the NFL is drooling over Jones, as Missouri learned firsthand. Jones had a sack, forced a fumble and had an interception in a huge road win over the Tigers. the final play of the game. He also missed from 40, 38 and 20 yards. taking shots at the Vols on a yearly basis, but it’s still an SEC classic.
