“It is,” said Illinois Supreme Court Justice Anne Burke, the only woman to chair the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ National Review Board on clerical sex abuse.
“And it should be a council for truth — a joint ecumenical council of the laity and the bishops,” said Burke, who pitched her proposal at the 10th Anniversary Conference of Voice of the Faithful in Boston recently.
“She blew everybody out of the water,” said a source.
To wit: Judge Burke, who felt truth was a victim when trying to get answers about the sex abuse scandal, urged the “laity to arise.”
The plea: “When we see something that needs fixing — what other choice do we have? Per- haps that is why some Europeans, especially in Rome, have difficulty with the sound of the American voice. We want the truth.”
(Burke reportedly had the Beantown crowd on their feet.)
