Brothers held without bail in killing after Simeon-morgan Park game

- Tina Sfondeles

Two brothers were ordered held without bail Saturday, accused of gunning down a 17-year-old boy outside a matchup of two top high school basketball teams last week at Chicago State University.

Michael McNabb, 32, of the 11500 block of South Racine, and Stephen Gilbert, 29, of Alsip, have been charged with firstdegree murder in the shooting death of Tyrone Lawson II.

The men are brothers, their father said after their bail hearing at the Leighton Criminal Court Building.

Lawson, a Morgan Park High School student, was killed Wednesday night near a parking lot on the South Side college campus after the game between Morgan Park and Simeon Career Academy.

Prosecutors said the teen never made it to the game, that he got there late and was talking with a group of girls outside when Gilbert allegedly rushed toward him and gunshots were fired.

Shot in the buttocks and back, Lawson collapsed and was found in a parking lot.

Police soon put out a flash message for the shooter, who witnesses said wore a white jacket and took off in a red Jeep.

Police pulled over a Jeep and found Gilbert in the back seat, with McNabb driving.

The gun and ammunition matched the weapon used in the shooting, authorities said. Witnesses identified the two suspects in a photo lineup, the police said.
