Area home sales, prices up

Chicago area home sales jumped 20.2 percent in February from a year ago while prices grew nearly 3.7 percent, an industry report says.

In the city of Chicago, sales grew 10.2 percent, while prices jumped 12.9 percent to $158,000. Condo sales, which have suffered more than single-home sales, increased at the same rate as overall home sales, and prices jumped 21.2 percent, to $200,000.

“City of Chicago home sales in the first two months of 2013 were 21.8 percent above where they were at the same time in 2012, despite the fact that sales traditionally slow in winter,” said Zeke Morris, president of the Chicago Association of Realtors and managing broker of Keller Williams Realty.

In the Chicago area, the median price rose to $140,000, and 5,935 homes sold. Sales and prices grew at different rates around the nine-county region: Cook: sales up 17 percent, median price up 4.7 percent DeKalb: sales down 1.6 percent; median price up 0.7 percent

DuPage: sales up 23.6 percent; median price up 5.9 percent

Grundy: sales up 29 percent; median price down 3.7 percent Kane: sales up 24 percent; median price up 1.9 pecent Kendall: sales up 34.3 percent; median price down 15.3 percent Lake: sales up 36.8 percent; median price up 7.4 percent McHenry: sales up 37.2 percent; median price up 7.6 percent
