Rodriguez defiant after crash, cops say

- BY SEAN JENSEN sjensen@suntimes.com

Bears fullback Evan Rodriguez told Miami Beach police officers he didn’t want any media attention after a car in which he was a passenger was involved in an accident Wednesday night.

But according to the police incident case summary, Rodriguez didn’t cooperate and eventually was charged with resisting without violence and disorderly intoxication.

After the accident, which occurred about 9 p.m. in Miami Beach, Rodriguez was instructed to provide identification.

‘‘For what? I don’t need this,’’ Rodriguez said, according to the report. ‘‘I’m an NFL player. I don’t need all the media stuff.’’

An officer told him his information would be entered in the passenger section of the accident report. But Rodriguez walked away from where he was instructed to remain while another officer conducted roadside tests on the driver. When he approached the officer conducting the tests, Rodriguez was told to return to the sidewalk. He refused, then said, “I’m hardheaded like that and I don’t have to listen,’’ according to the report.

An officer informed Rodriguez that because he was just a passenger, his information would be entered into the report and then he would be released. But Rodriguez again moved and yelled at the driver, interrupting the roadside exercise and demanding to know the whereabouts of the other driver.

Rodriguez had ‘‘slurred speech, bloodshot watery eyes and a strong odor of alcoholic beverage emitting from his breath,’’ the report said.

Rodriguez is in the Miami area to work out with Bears receiver Brandon Marshall. Calls to his agent were not returned Thursday.
