Police chief who quit after 2 DUIs still getting paid

Former Robbins police Chief Johnny Holmes — who re retired in January after being charged with his second DU DUI in the past three years — will keep getting paid $1 $1,923 every two weeks through April 19 because he do doesn’t have a state pension, village officials say.

Village Trustee Shantiel Simon said Holmes signed up up for a retirement plan through the state, then opted out, and the Robbins village administra­tion never signed him back up.

“We knew we had to let him go, but we thought about hi his family, and here’s a guy that’s about to walk away w with nothing,” Simon said.

Holmes, who is also a member of the Community High School District 218 Board, was arrested in Midlothian in December for driving drunk..

According to court records, Holmes had been sentenced to court supervisio­n and paid more than $1,000 in in fees for an earlier DUI arrest, in 2010.

Holmes was put on paid leave from March through M May 2010 but kept his job, though he was ordered to turn in the keys he had for any village-owned vehicles.

Holmes had two stints as police chief since 1991. He w was fired in December 2003 for “deficienci­es in current po police services and continuous complaints from citizens,” ac according to a letter from outgoing Mayor Irene Brodie.

He was rehired as chief two years later with a $1 $10,000 pay increase, boosting his pay to $50,000, acco cording to village records.

The Cook County sheriff ’s police — now aiding the Ro Robbins department — said last month it had discover ered 51 untested rape kits sitting in a Robbins police evidence room, some dating to 1981.

Holmes did not respond to messages seeking comment.
