QUICK WAY TO GET COPS ON STREET?

The gravy train. . .

-

Memo to Police Supt. Garry McCarthy, who is trying to keep the murder rate down:

How about eliminating the use of Chicago cops at O’Hare Airport in order to put them back on the street?

The buckshot: Sneed is told the Aviation Security officers at O’Hare, a state-certified police agency qualified each year to carry guns, are not allowed to carry their weapons while working — and are required to call Chicago Police officers assigned to O’Hare if they need backup.

The upshot: “It’s a shocking and unnecessary display of overlapping — mixed in with patronage and seasoned like a gravy train,” said an aviation cop who is a retired Chicago policeman.

Sling shot: “It’s a joke! Despite the fact we are trained at the Chicago Police Academy, need to pass state exams to become officers, and are tested each year to qualify to carry firearms — and despite the fact we are assigned to all checkpoints entering the airport as well as vehicle stops and searches — we need to call the Chicago Police if we need backup!” the source added.

“It’s like sending the Chicago cops to protect Chicago Police,” added the veteran cop, who claims at least 25 percent of the aviation patrol is made up of retired Chicago Police officers.

The kicker: “Although we are not issued guns, we are qualified to carry guns when we are off duty,” added the source.

The solution: “Arm the certified aviation police and you can put over 100 Chicago Police back to street duty,” he said.

The response: The Chicago Department of Aviation has yet to respond to requests for comment.
