Michigan topples Kansas in overtime
Trey Burke scored all 23 of his points after halftime, including a long, tying three-pointer in the final seconds of regulation, and fourthseeded Michigan rallied to oust topseeded Kansas 87-85 in the South Regional semifinals Friday night in Arlington, Texas.
The Wolverines (29-7) wiped out a 10-point lead in the last three minutes of regulation, and Burke gave them their first lead since early in the game with another long three to open Michigan’s scoring in overtime.
Michigan reached the regional finals for the first time since the Fab Five era 19 years ago, the last time they were in the round of 16.
Ben McLemore had 20 points to lead the Jayhawks (31-6), who looked to be on their way to a third consecutive regional final before Michigan’s improbable rally.
Louisville 77, Oregon 69
Russ Smith matched his career high with 31 points as the top-seeded Cardinals (32-5) overcame their toughest test yet in beating the 12thseeded Ducks (28-9) in the Midwest Regional semifinals in Indianapolis. Kevin Ware added 11 and Gorgui Dieng had 10 points and nine rebounds for Louisville, which has won 13 in a row. Coach Rick Pitino improved to 11-0 in the regional semifinals of the NCAA tournament.
Duke 71, Michigan State 61
Seth Curry shot the Blue Devils (30-5) into the Midwest Regional final — and put coach Mike Krzyzewski on the verge of another major milestone. Curry’s 29 points lifted second-seeded Duke past the thirdseeded Spartans (27-9) in Indianapolis. If Duke beats Louisville in Sunday’s regional final, Krzyzewski would tie John Wooden’s record with 12 Final Four trips.
Fla. 62, Fla. Gulf Coast 50
Mike Rosario had 15 points and the third-seeded Gators (29-7) will go to a regional final for the third year in a row after beating the 15thseeded Eagles (26-11) in Arlington, Texas. Florida will play Michigan in the South Regional final on Sunday.
Three Illini transfer
Three Illinois reserves — sophomores Mike Shaw and Ibby Djimde and redshirt freshman Devin Langford — will transfer rather than languish on the bench. They were recruited by former coach Bruce Weber and aren’t suited for John Groce’s system.
