Cards’ Westbrook denied milestone
Russell Martin highlighted a four-run seventh inning with a two-run home run, and the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates rallied to defeat the St. Louis Cardinals 5-3 on Saturday to deprive Jake Westbrook of his 100th career victory.
Westbrook scattered six hits, struck out six and left with a 2-0 lead after six innings. But the Pirates scored four times against losing pitcher Joe Kelly (0-1) in the seventh after scoring only once in the first 15 innings of the series.
Before the game, Major League Baseball suspended Pirates left-hander Jonathan Sanchez for six games and fined him an undisclosed amount for hitting the Cardinals’ Allen Craig with a pitch in the first inning Friday. Sanchez said he would appeal.
Harper homers again
Bryce Harper hit a tworun homer, scored twice and set a team record for RBI in April with 18, and Dan Haren (2-3) yielded two runs and six hits in six solid innings to fuel the host Washington Nationals past the Cincinnati Reds 6-3 for their third consecutive victory.
Best of the rest
Jhonny Peralta and Omar Infante hit two-run homers, Miguel Cabrera had two run-scoring singles and the Detroit Tigers overcame Justin Upton’s major-league-leading 12th homer to earn a 7-4 victory against the visiting Atlanta Braves.
Jacoby Ellsbury had a two-run single and David Ortiz a two-run double in a four-run second inning that carried the host Boston Red Sox past the Houston Astros 8-4. The Red Sox have won four in a row and have the best record in the majors at 17-7.
Travis Hafner hit a three-run homer in the fourth inning, then drove in the tiebreaking run with a triple in the seventh to boost the New York Yankees past the visiting Toronto Blue Jays 5-4.
