Prison for stalking girl, 9

Peter Surges wrote dozens of love notes to a 9-year-old girl he met at the Streamwood school where he worked, including a poem for the youngster titled “10 Things That Stand Out About You.”

The 53-year-old Surges opened a Facebook page dedicated to her and then posted a picture of himself as a boy on the website.

Once, he visited her home and knocked on her window to scare her, then warned her later to keep her blinds closed when she changed clothes. The Streamwood man was sentenced to two years in prison after pleading guilty to felony stalking.

As part of the sentence, Cook County Judge Ellen Mandeltort imposed a permanent order that requires Surges to stay at least 200 feet away from the girl.

“It prohibits any contact with her over the course of his life,” said Sally Daly, a spokeswoman for the Cook County state’s attorney’s office.

The stalking spanned a 14-month period that ended last October after the child showed a relative one of Surges’ letters, prosecutors said.

Surges began his disturbing actions after meeting the child at the grade school where he worked as a lunchroom monitor, prosecutors said during his sentencing.

Before his arrest, Surges penned 40 to 50 notes for the girl, telling her he loved her and praising her as sexy, Assistant State’s Attorney Michael Gerber said.
