Sky romps behind Delle Donne, Fowles

Rookie Elena Delle Donne scored a career-high 26 points and Sylvia Fowles added her fifth double-double of the season as the Sky (6-3) rallied from an early deficit on the way to a 87-74 victory over the New York Liberty (4-4) on Wednesday at Allstate Arena.

Fowles had 19 points and 14 rebounds for the Sky, Epiphanny Prince had 14 points and Shay Murphy added 13.

“My shot felt good today,” said Delle Donne, who hit 10 of 17 shots, grabbed seven rebounds and passed out six assists. “I got some extra adrenaline because the last game it was poor.”

Ducks hit with probation

The NCAA stripped Oregon of a scholarshi­p in each of the next three seasons and placed the program on probation for three years, opting against stiffer penalties such as a bowl ban despite issuing a showcause order against former coach Chip Kelly, who apologized to the school, its fans and its players.

The NCAA’s Division I Committee on Infraction­s released a report that said Kelly failed to monitor the program for its improper involvemen­t with Willie Lyles and his Houston-based recruiting service.

Lochte, Franklin shine

Ryan Lochte and Missy Franklin each won two swimming national titles in Indianapol­is with times that ranked among the top five in the world this year.

They each won in the 200 freestyle, then returned to the pool less than 90 minutes later and won in the 200 backstroke.

Lochte took the 200 free in 1 minute, 45.97 seconds and claimed the 200 back in 1:55.16. Franklin captured the 200 free in 1:55.63. She then set a U.S. Open record in the 200 back at 2:05.68, the world’s best time this year.

Larry Bird will return to his old job as the Indiana Pacers’ president of basketball operations.

Scott Kazmir took a no-hitter into the seventh, and the visiting Cleveland Indians scored two ninth-inning runs off Baltimore Orioles closer Jim Johnson to pull out a 4-3 victory.
