Irish will keep USC series

Notre Dame’s partnership with the ACC won’t affect its series with USC.

The Irish and Trojans agreed to extend their football series through 2023, USC announced in a news release Wednesday.

Notre Dame will travel to USC on Thanksgiving weekend in even-numbered years. The teams will meet in South Bend in mid-October in the odd-numbered years. The series dates back to 1926.

“Not only are we pleased to be able to extend our storied series with Notre Dame, but we were able to keep the game on the traditional dates of Thanksgiving weekend in Los Angeles and mid-October in South Bend,” USC athletic director Pat Haden said in a statement.

Notre Dame will play five games a season against ACC schools starting in 2014. The ripple effect has led to Notre Dame and Michigan taking an extended break in their series after the 2014 season. Notre Dame also recently worked out a new date for its 2014 game at Arizona State. Originally slated for Oct. 25, 2014, the teams now will meet on Nov. 8, 2014. According to Arizona State, a 2017 game between the teams at Notre Dame has been canceled.

Recruit added

Defensive end Jonathan Bonner, a three-star recruit, made an oral commitment to Notre Dame on Wednesday, according to multiple reports.

The 6-3, 253-pound Bonner had 12 sacks in 2012 at Parkway Central High School in Chesterfield, Mo., according to IrishIllustrated.com.

Illinois, Michigan State and Missouri were among the schools also in the running.

Bonner is the 13th member of Notre Dame’s Class of 2014 and the fourth defensive player in the group. Four-star defensive tackle Jay Hayes and three-star recruits Andrew Trumbetti (defensive lineman) and Greer Martini (linebacker) also have made oral commitments to Notre Dame.
