Peavy likely to make rehab start Sunday
DETROIT — As much as Jake Peavy wants to avoid a minor-league rehab start, it’s not a realistic wish for the White Sox right-hander.
Peavy, who tested the healing rib on his left side in a simulated game Tuesday afternoon at Comerica Park, came away feeling well and likely will pitch in a minorleague game Sunday, not in Philadelphia on the last day before the All-Star break as he had hoped. Manager Robin Ventura didn’t rule out a second rehab start just to be safe.
“We took a step in the right direction. No pain,’’ said Peavy, who is recovering from a fracture. “The biggest thing is arm strength, trying to work it back. I thought the stuff was a step up from where it was in the bullpen [last week], and that’s exciting for me.’’
Peavy was pleased with the feel he had for his pitches and command. With the Sox far from contention, Peavy is a candidate to be dealt. He has said that he’d welcome a trade to a contender, and that could happen if he returns to health.
“It’s tough being hurt and being on the [disabled list],’’ he said. “It’s the worst spot on the roster you can be in. It’s extremely tough when your team is struggling. You feel so helpless.’’
A new wrinkle
Dylan Axelrod, who is 0-2 with a 6.23 ERA in his last seven starts after going 3-0 with a 4.32 in his previous three, felt encouraged by his bullpen session between starts. Axelrod worked on commanding pitches bet- ter in the lower part of the strike zone, and he experimented with varying speeds on his curve.
“I want to get back out there after that last one,’’ said Axelrod, who gave up five runs and nine hits in 1⅔ innings Friday against the Tampa Bay Rays. “I’m excited about the challenge against a good team [Wednesday against the Detroit Tigers].’’
Axelrod is 0-1 with a 5.84 ERA lifetime against the Tigers.
Phegley 4-for-5
Josh Phegley started for the fourth time in five games since being called up. Ventura batted him ninth against Justin Verlander. Catcher Hector Gimenez, who was designated for assignment when Phegley was called up, accepted an assignment to Class AAA Charlotte.
Crain’s business
All-Star Jesse Crain (shoulder strain) played catch for the first time since going on the DL. Crain said he felt OK, adding it was too soon to know if he’ll be ready to come off the DL when he’s eligible.
