Ford Taurus reemerges with improved driving dynamics

- BY JOHN STEIN

The Ford Taurus reappeared just two years ago as the more refined, more dynamic full-size sedan you see today. And in two years, Taurus has managed to make a difference for Ford. How much difference? Enough to be considered one of the segment leaders, and the 2013 model is more refined with an enhanced exterior design, delivering better fuel economy, more technology, improved craftsmanship and immensely improved driving dynamics.

With a choice of new engines this year, the Taurus delivers increased fuel efficiency, 19 miles per gallon city, 29 mpg highway — and up to 31 miles per gallon highway with the EcoBoost engine.

That unto itself is worth noting for a full-size sedan weighing in at 3,969 pounds.

The 2013 Taurus comes in two versions: standard family fare (its specialty) in the SE, SEL and Limited trims, which start at $26,600 and the ever-impressive SHO (Super High Output) model for those looking for a family mover that is also a real shaker. (Read: It’s incredibly fun to drive.)

The Taurus and Taurus SHO are modern family sedans with new engines, optimized transmissions, updated electronics, communications/navigation and audio systems that will create a sense of value and a sense of pride. Inside the quiet, roomy cabin, you will find a feeling of space made possible with plenty of glass surround and a gentle slope to the overhead roofline. Front and rear seats are very comfortable and easy to maneuver into a good operating position.

My tester Limited featured soft leather seats and precise fit and finish. There is definitely an increase (thankfully) of soft-touch surfaces and noticeably higher quality materials with heated and cooled leather-trimmed seats that can be set with an active motion, rolling massage.

Ford has also updated its SYNC with MyFord Touch system adding colorful LCD screens and steering wheelmounted five-way toggles. The freshened version combines voice control for a variety of vehicle functions, and enables Bluetooth devices, MP3 players and a host of external media.

Providing the real motion for the 2013 Taurus is a standard 3.5-liter V6 producing 290 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque.

If you decide to go fun for the heck of it, plan on adding $5,000 for the SHO, but you won’t regret the fun f actor you get for the price.
