Kirk, Israel on the right side of Iran negotiations
Another letter writer recently claimed that Sen. Mark Kirk is marching to the orders of Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in order to sabotage U.S. efforts to forge a nuclear detente deal with Iran. Does the writer lack the simple ability to see that Iran has lied in perpetuity as well as supplied the Middle east with weapons to keep that area in turmoil?
Israel is the truest friend this nation has had in its history. This small but powerful country has saved the American people countless billions of dollars as well as the lives of an untold number of American servicemen by stopping Iran and the PLO from turning the Middle East into a war zone of superpower proportions. To state such stupidity only fosters antiSemitism as well as hatred for a proud and loyal friend.
Sen. Kirk, keep up your great work!

Democrats were forced to act
It is not “nuclear” — as the New York Times put it in an editorial — to “turn the Senate back into a functioning legislative body.” [“Dems will regret going ‘nuclear,’” Steve Huntley, Nov. 22]. To further quote the Times’ editorial “. . . half of all filibusters waged against nominations in Senate history have occurred since Mr. Obama was elected.”
The extreme level of obstruction to which this president has been subjected has caused the government to become dysfunctional (i.e. shutdown). There is no budget agreement; we almost defaulted on our loans, courts are short-handed, watchdog agencies are under manned and compromise is a dirty word.
I applaud the Democrats for doing what they had to do when the opposition went too far in an attempt to change the outcome of two elections.

Thanks, Neil
Thank you, Neil Steinberg, for writing about Bill Mauldin’s cartoon “The Grieving Lincoln,” one of the most widely disseminated cartoons ever. I was one of the half million people who requested a copy from the Sun-Times and still have it. I was 26 years young at the time of JFK’s untimely demise and my heart, like those of so many others, was broken by the shame and tragedy of it all. I have often wondered if anyone remembered this cartoon.
Mr. Mauldin will always share a warm place in my life for having giving us this wonderful portrayal of how we as Americans felt about our beloved president.
