Loyola slips past Edwardsvil­le

Matt O’Leary, Christian Thomas and Jeff White each scored 14 points, and Loyola edged SIU-Edwardsvil­le 73-72 on Sunday in a consolatio­n game of the Portland (Ore.) State Tournament.

The Ramblers (3-4) shot 57 percent from the field and made 42 percent of their three-point attempts in a game in which neither team led by more than five points.

‘‘I’m proud of the guys because they are exhausted, but they grinded it out,’’ said Loyola coach Porter Moser, whose team was playing its third game in three days. ‘‘We talked about getting one stop [at the end], and we got it.’’

Donivine Stewart scored a game-high 22 points to lead the Cougars (1-5).

North Carolina 93, Louisville 84

Marcus Paige scored 32 points, and the No. 24 Tar Heels (4-1) turned a threepoint game with 13 minutes left into a 16-point lead before holding off the No. 3 Cardinals (5-1) in the championsh­ip game of the Hall of Fame Tipoff Tournament in Uncasville, Conn.

Kennedy Meeks added 13 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists and Brice Johnson 13 points for North Carolina, which overcame a 36-point effort by Louisville star Russ Smith.

Notre Dame 93, Army 60

Garrick Sherman and Jerian Grant each scored 19 points to lead five players in double figures, and the Irish (4-1) shot 56.5 percent from the field on their way to a rout of the Black Knights (1-4) in South Bend, Ind.

Grant also had eight assists and six steals and Sherman seven rebounds for Notre Dame, which erupted for 60 points in the second half.

Northern Illinois 111, St. Joseph’s (Ind.) 61

Darrell Bowie scored 23 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, J.J. Cravatta added 20 points and the Huskies (2-3) took advantage of a 67-22 rebounding edge to roll past the Division II Pumas (1-4) in DeKalb, Ill.

NIU held St. Joseph’s to 37 percent shooting, including 28 percent from threepoint range.
