THREE THINGS WE KNOW

- — Phil Brozynski

1 There’s nothing like defeating your mentor, particularly after your mentor beat you just a few weeks earlier. Brooks’ 66-52 victory Saturday against Maine West avenged a 77-58 loss Jan. 25 in Des Plaines. The series between the schools has its roots in the long friendship between Maine West coach Derril Kipp and Brooks coach Reggie Dawson. “I learned everything from Kipp,” Dawson said. “He even taught me how to drive a car, so you know how long I’ve been with him.”

2 Immaculate Conception’s Rory Manion is thinking about two state titles in one year. Manion, who had 10 kills in the Knights’ 25-19, 25-15 victory against Edwards County in the Class 2A volleyball final, had 19 points and 10 rebounds in a Class 2A regional championship victory against Westminster Christian. “We have a good shot,” Manion said. “We just have to keep playing how we’ve been playing and go harder. That’s our goal this year — to get to state.”

3 A couple of records were at stake at Jacobs when Streamwood took on Dundee-Crown in a Class 4A regional semifinal Tuesday. Streamwood senior Hannah McGlone needed just seven rebounds to become the first player in school history to get 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in a career, and coach George Rosner was one victory shy of No. 400. McGlone hauled in 17 boards in the Sabres’ 61-50 victory, helping Rosner reach his milestone.
