84, of Chicago, died peacefully of natural causes at his home Thursday.

He was born on October 21, 1929, on the South side of Chicago. Dr. Pieper graduated from St. Ignatius High School, and received his B.A. and M.D from The University of Illinois. He married Martha Heineman and they lived in Chicago and shared vacations on Martha’s Vineyard, and Eagle, WI.

Dr. William Pieper was a medical doctor and psychoanal­yst who co-founded, co-authored and co-developed Intrapsych­ic Humanism, Addicted to Unhappines­s, Smart Love, and the Smart Love Clinic and the Natalie G. Heineman Smart Love Preschool, with his wife and partner, Dr. Martha Heineman Pieper. Dr. William Pieper was a passionate advocate for children, and had an immediate rapport and empathy with young people. His honesty and willingnes­s to see children as individual­s made children adore and trust him. He was truly interested in what they had to say. He was a committed and caring clinician who loved his work. His favorite hobbies were riding horses with his wife and reading philosophy. Dr. Pieper was a loving husband, father, and grandfathe­r, filled with enormous generosity and humanity.

Dr. Pieper is survived by his wife, Dr. Martha Heineman Pieper; five children and stepchildr­en, Joseph Pieper, married to Janet, of Chicago, Victoria Heineman-Pieper of St. Charles, Jessica Heineman-Pieper, married to Param Srikantia, of Cleveland, OH, Thalia Field, married to Jamie Jewett, of Providence, RI, and Johanna HeinemanPi­eper, of Chicago; and five grandchild­ren, Colin, Hayley, Nola, Gershon, and Benjamin.
