The Illinois High School Association on Monday ruled Bogan, Hyde Park and Uplift ineligible to compete in the state playoffs. The schools violated IHSA rules on the number of games that can be played in a season.

‘‘[IHSA assistant executive director] Kurt Gibson called this morning and told me that we wouldn’t be able to play in the playoffs,’’ Uplift coach David Taylor said. ‘‘I’m a little shocked. I haven’t had a chance to discuss it with the team yet.’’

The IHSA allows teams to play in 16 games if they participate in three tournaments, but Hyde Park and Bogan played in 17. Teams aren’t allowed to play in more than three tournaments, but Uplift played in four (Mundelein, Proviso West, the Redbird Classic and the Public League playoffs).

Taylor said he thought the Redbird Classic was considered a shootout, not a tournament.

Uplift is 23-4 and received the No. 2 seed at the Class 3A Antioch Sectional. The Titans were scheduled to open the playoffs next Tuesday against Northtown or Senn.

Bogan is 24-4, ranked No. 9 in the Super 25 and received the top seed at the Class 3A Vocational Section- al. The Bengals would have started their playoff run next Tuesday at the St. Laurence Regional.

Hyde Park is 19-9, ranked No. 20 in the Super 25 and received the No. 2 seed at the Vocational Sectional. The Thunderbirds were scheduled to play Johnson or Comer next Tuesday in the Julian Regional.

The IHSA is planning to recalculate the sectional pairings at Vocational and Antioch. The remaining teams will be moved up one seed from their original position.

‘‘These situations don’t occur very often, but it is always disappointing when they do,’’ IHSA executive director Marty Hickman said. ‘‘The season limitations are long-standing IHSA rules that are necessary to maintain competitive balance.’’
