Richards’ Tears headed to Nebraska

- BY BETH LONG Fox Sports NEXT

Richards junior receiver Spencer Tears made his college decision, choosing Nebraska after making a weekend visit to attend the Cornhuskers’ spring game.

‘‘I just felt like it was the best fit for me,’’ Tears said. ‘‘After being at Nebraska, I really felt something special. It was a good feeling. I talked it over with my mom, and she loved the school, too, and thought it was a great place to be.’’

Tears has impressed recruiters and Richards coach Tony Sheehan this spring.

‘‘He’s a good kid, always smiling,’’ Sheehan said. ‘‘He likes to joke around, play around with the guys. But when it’s time to get serious, he works hard. He really works on his craft, his hands and getting stronger.’’

Tears said he thinks he is a good fit for Nebraska’s offense, which will feature several area athletes next fall, including former Montini receiver Jordan Westerkamp, former Crete-Monee offensive lineman Matt Finnin and former De La Salle running back Mikale Wilbon.

‘‘I like how they spread the ball around,’’ Tears said. ‘‘The option-read is a killer. But when you have a threat outside to throw the rock to, too, it’s a dangerous offense to play. I feel like I can come in and fit in perfectly.’’

Illinois offers in-state prospects

Raby junior defensive lineman Jamal Milan picked up scholarship offers from Illinois and Syracuse within 12 hours.

‘‘When I got the offers, I was so excited,’’ Milan said. ‘‘My dreams were finally coming true. I mean, I got two big offers in almost one day!’’

Milan since has added scholarship offers from Northern Illinois and Ball State.

‘‘I was excited because it would be nice to be somewhere my family could visit me with no problems,’’ Milan said.

Another area prospect who picked up a scholarship offer from Illinois was Warren tight end Caleb Reams, who committed to Western Michigan earlier in the recruiting process. He since has added offers from Northern Illinois, Wake For- est and Colgate, too.

‘‘A month ago, I didn’t expect this at all,’’ Reams said. ‘‘I like it. I like Western Michigan, but Illinois is a great academic school. Their football team is coming around, too. I like the offer, and it makes me much more confident.’’

Boykin adds offer

Ohio State extended a scholarship offer to Providence junior receiver Miles Boykin.

‘‘I like the fan base and the tradition at Ohio State,’’ Boykin said. ‘‘Plus, the game-day atmosphere is unbelievable. They offered me, then told me they want me to get on the phone with coach [Urban] Meyer later.’’

Boykin said he plans to narrow his list to 10 schools at the end of spring and is eyeing a college decision in early fall.
