Subaru WRX redesign pays homage to racing success

- BY IRA SIEGEL

An all- new Subaru WRX debuts f or 2015 with new styling, a stif f er str ucture, retuned suspension, and a new engine i n base WRX models.

The WRX pays homage to Subaru’s success in Rally and Rallycross racing. Pricing f or the WRX starts at $ 26,295.

The 2015 WRX is based on the latestgeneration Impreza sedan. However, Subaru has dropped “Impreza” from its name to indicate that the WRX is a much higher performing sedan.

The new WRX features a bolder and wider profile. The chassis has been stiffened by 41 percent. The hood, fenders, doors, bumpers, quarter-panels, headlights, and tail light clusters all are unique to the 2015 WRX.

The new WRX looks more modern and aerodynamic than its predecessor. The panels feature a more sculpted look.

The functional hood scoop has been set more deeply into the aluminum hood to improve forward visibility. Plus, greater forward visibility is offered by the greater rake in the windshield. The A-pillars have been pulled forward nearly eight inches at the base.

The side sills are lower and the doors open wider, making it easier to enter and exit. The wheelbase has been lengthened one inch to help provide nearly two inches of additional legroom for rear passengers.

Whether you are starting the WRX or the WRX STI, there is a nice throaty growl from the exhaust.

Under the hood of the 2015 WRX is an allnew twin-scroll turbocharged direct-injected 2.0-liter horizontally-opposed (Boxer) four-cyl- inder engine that pounds out 268 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque.

With WRX, there are two transmission choices; a six-speed manual or a CVT that features steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters to enjoy manual shifting.

Regardless of which transmission you choose, the WRX features an impressive allwheel-drive system to enhance traction on all types of surfaces.

Stepping up to the WRX STI (starting at $34,495) nets you a 2.5-liter turbocharged horizontally-opposed (Boxer) engine that delivers 305 horsepower and 290 pound-feet of torque.

All WRX STI models feature a six-speed manual transmission and an all-wheel-drive system with a driver-adjustable center differential. There are actually six different locking levels to optimize performance to suit the driving situation and surface conditions.

The STI also benefits from a stiffer suspension and large and powerful Brembo performance brakes. While the stiff suspension system reduces body roll significantly, the ride is very stiff for everyday driving.

The WRX STI is powerful, agile, and fun to drive. On a negative note, a fair amount of unwanted wind and road noise permeates the cabin.

The cabin is a bit roomier, and I like the new flat-bottom leather-wrapped steering wheel. I also like the supportive and stylish seats, and standard automatic climate control.

The available nine-speaker harmon/ kardon premium audio system cranks out 440-watts. This system came standard in my 2015 Subaru WRX STI Limited tester, and it is a welcome addition.

The WRX is affordable and extremely fun to drive. If your budget allows, stepping up to the STI certainly increases the thrill factor.
