Brandon McCarthy (4-10) allowed one run and six hits and struck out nine in six innings, Carlos Beltran homered and Brett Gardner drove in three runs to pace the New York Yankees past the visiting Cincinnati Reds 7-1. McCarthy was making his second start for the Yankees, who acquired him in a trade with the Arizona Diamondbac­ks to upgrade a rotation depleted by injuries to four starters.

David Price (10-7) yielded four hits and struck out nine in eight scoreless innings to win his fifth consecutiv­e start, and Sean Rodriguez homered and drove in three runs to power the Tampa Bay Rays past the host Minnesota Twins 5-1 for their fourth consecutiv­e victory.

Ryan Zimmerman and Wilson Ramos drove in three runs apiece, and the Washington Nationals battered Matt Garza (6-7) for five runs and five hits in a third of an inning — the shortest start of his major-league career — in an 8-3 victory against the visiting Milwaukee Brewers.

Jordy Mercer doubled in Neil Walker with one out in the 11th inning to boost the host Pittsburgh Pirates past the Colorado Rockies 3-2. Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki left with a cramp in his left thigh in the fourth.
