Volkswagen CC a refined sedan with attitude

- BY JOHN STEIN

The 2014 Volkswagen CC underwent a redesign last year and little exterior personality has changed — and that’s a great thing for fans of VW and sedans.

The new VW CC is the best-looking sedan in the VW fleet, and its frameless side windows and slick, sweeping roofline are signature design elements that have made it unique and highly desirable.

The intention of VW was to begin with a low stance and establish a highly athletic attitude, outside the box for VW sedans. That more aggressive and capable body detailing rolls into the cabin to deliver a luxurious, inviting

interior experience.

The Bi-Xenon headlights and LED taillights, which were added last year for the redesign, are still attractive points of emphasis on the outside and standard equipment.

When it comes to the exterior styling, the CC provides a sleek, immediate impression with distinct sophistication shining through. I really like the edgy hood design along with the prominent front and rear fascias. The VW logo is the focal point for the front grille, as it sweeps back gently to a sharp edge that slides right into the character line running the length of the CC.

Inside the refined cabin of the CC, you will encounter high-quality materials and impressive fit and finish. Attention to detail is a big part of the appeal in this sedan interior, and it all starts with a great fitting leatherwrapped, three-spoke steering wheel with embedded media controls. Driver and passenger will find front-row seating to be very accommodating with

power adjust- ments providing perfect seating. Rear seats have slightly compromised headroom due to the sweeping roofline, but legroom was plentiful. This back seat can handle three adults, but it will be tight.

The base Sport model starts at $30,610. Moving up from the Sport is the Sport Plus, Lux model, VR6 Lux model, the VR6 4Motion Executive model and the CC R-line.

The VW CC offers two engine options. The smaller output 2.0-liter, turbocharged, Direct Injection inline four-cylinder is mated to either a six-speed manual or a six-speed DSG automatic transmission with Tiptronic.

The larger engine is the 3.6-liter V6 (280 horsepower) that provides a very fun 265 pound-feet of torque. The VR6 mates to a six-speed automatic with Tiptronic. The VR6-equipped CC’s have a front-wheel or all-wheel-drive choice.

The new CC will provide an enjoyable ride for most looking to buy into this compact sedan class. With great drive characteristics, firm handling and a sense of athleticism, the CC is a lively driving experience with especially noteworthy interior comfort.
