Making it official

-

Bulls announce they’ve re-signed veteran guard Kirk Hinrich to a two-year contract.

It was something old and something new Monday for the Bulls, who officially announced they had re-signed veteran guard Kirk Hinrich to a two-year contract and signed second-round draft pick Cameron Bairstow.

The news Hinrich was coming back broke during the first weekend of Summer League play and was important for the Bulls, especially with the knee injuries that have plagued point guard Derrick Rose the last couple of seasons. Hinrich averaged 9.1 points and 3.9 assists last season.

‘‘Kirk has always been a big part of creating the professional culture we want surrounding our club,’’ general manager Gar Forman said in a statement. ‘‘He helps our team in so many ways. Kirk had other opportunities elsewhere, but we are very happy he chose to remain in a Bulls uniform.’’

As for Bairstow, a 6-10 forward from Australia, his physical play was on full display throughout the Summer League and caught the eye of the entire coaching staff. He averaged 20.4 points and 7.4 rebounds as a senior last season at New Mexico.

The Dallas Mavericks signed free-agent forward Richard Jeffer

son to a reported one-year contract for the veteran minimum of $1.4 million. Jefferson, 34, averaged 10.1 points and shot 41 percent from three-point range for the Utah Jazz last season.
