Illini football staffer hit with DUI arrest

-

Ryan Cubit, Illinois’ director of student- athlete development for the football program, was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence early Sunday.

Cubit is the son of second- year Illini offensive coordinator Bill

Cubit. He spent five seasons on his father’s staff at Western Michigan, serving as co- offensive coordinator in 2012, and was hired by Illinois in March.

The incident is another blow to coach Tim Beckman, who is fighting for his job in the wake of the Illini’s loss Oct. 4 to Purdue. Illinois has lost its last three games to fall to 3- 4 overall and 0- 3 in the Big Ten.

With Beckman’s job on the line, it’s worth paying attention to whether this incident affects an already- tumultuous situation. Bill Cubit is a widely respected offensive mind who had the Illini looking good on that side of the ball before quarterback Wes Lunt suffered a broken leg against the Boilermakers. Should Beckman get fired, Cubit might get consideration to replace him. † Suspended running back

Todd Gurley was back at practice for No. 10 Georgia, even though he hasn’t been cleared to play. Gurley remains on indefinite suspension while the Bulldogs investigate possible violations of NCAA rules related to improper benefits. He was held out of Georgia’s 34- 0 victory Saturday at Missouri butwas back for the practice in full pads. † Indiana junior quarterback

Nate Sudfeld will miss the rest of the season after separating his non- throwing shoulder Saturday against Iowa. Coach Kevin Wilson said Sudfeld will have surgery Thursday to repair the injury and will be replaced by freshman Chris

Covington, whowas 3- for- 12 for 31 yards after taking over for Sudfeld against the Hawkeyes.

† North Carolina State suspended seven players, including starting linebacker and leading tackler Jerod Fernandez and starting safety Josh Jones, for its game Saturday against Louisville for their involvement in a BB- gun incident, coach Dave Doeren said. Doeren provided no details.

Buffalo fired coach Jeff

Quinn in the wake of a loss Saturday to Eastern Michigan, which hadn’t beaten a Football Bowl Subdivision opponent all season. The Bulls, who promoted offensive coordinator Alex Wood to interim coach, are 3- 4 this season and were 20- 36 overall under Quinn.

Florida coach Will Muschamp said freshman Treon Harris will share snaps with junior

Jeff Driskell at quarterback Saturday against Missouri. Driskel has committed eight turnovers in the Gators’ last three games.
