Reid says Toub still one of the best
When the Bears went looking for a coach and general manager, one popular theory was that they could pair former Bears director of pro scouting and current Chiefs executive Chris Ballard with another familiar name, Dave Toub, as head coach.
It never happened, and Chiefs coach Andy Reid said he’s surprised Toub— the Chiefs’ specialteams coach, who served the same role for the Bears from 2004 to ’12 — hasn’t been named a head coach.
Toub first worked with Reid at UTEP in 1987. He joined him with the Chiefs two years ago.
“He’s one of the better specialteams coaches in the NFL,” Reid said. “I’m partial because he’s with me and he’s a friend that I’ve known for a long time.”
Beast modes
Asked whether he has justified the five-year, $38.75 million contract he signed in the offseason, outside linebacker PernellMcPhee said it just made him hungrier.
“I want more money,” he said with a smile. “That wasn’t enough. Now I’m trying to get $100 [million]. Just to prove I ain’t no bluff.”
The Chiefs’ JustinHouston signed a six-year, $101 million deal in the offseason. McPhee said Houston is a “beast,” but he is, too.
“There’s all different kinds of beasts,” he said.
Injuries abound
Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said, “Winning has cured more ills than penicillin.” But it might not heal injuries.
The Bears’ long injury list includes five players who didn’t participate in practice.
Wide receiver Eddie Royal, guard Patrick Omameh and safety Antrel Rolle have ankle injuries, while cornerback Sherrick McManis has a hamstring issue. Left tackle Jermon Bushrod still is going through the league’s concussion protocol more than a week after being injured in Seattle.
This and that
Wide receiver Alshon Jeffery and quarterback Jay Cutler were limited in practice with hamstring injuries.
Other limited players were right tackle Kyle Long (back/ ankle), cornerback Alan Ball (groin), linebacker SheaMcClellin (elbow), defensive linemen Will Sutton (elbow) and Jeremiah Ratliff (ankle) and punter Pat O’Donnell (right knee).
With Rolle hurt, the Bears promoted safety Demontre Hurst from the practice squad and signed Ryan Seymour, who started three games at center for the Browns last year, to the practice squad.
