No trade talk from Young
Refuses to discuss the report that he asked to be dealt
After being a healthy scratch in Seattle, watching Jared Allen get dealt, then playing 18 snaps against the Raiders, Willie Young has a scouting report on his own play.
“Got after the quarterback a couple of times,” the defensive end-turned- outside linebacker said Wednesday at Halas Hall. “Won my one-on-one rushes, made the most of my opportunities. It’s all about consistency now.”
Young had never played outside linebacker until — after having surgery on his Achilles tendon — he began the conversion to fit into Vic Fangio’s 3-4 defense. Allen tried the same switch but was eventually traded so he could return to his familiar end spot.
Could that happen to Young, too?
A report Sunday night indicated that, once Allen was dealt, Young asked the Bears for a trade.
When asked to clarify, Young would not.
“Really, just no comment on it, for real,” he said before referring questions on the issue to his agent. ‘‘I’m just here to be a player, man, and do whatever my coaches ask.
“It’s all good. I’m just here to do what my coach is asking me to do and to be a professional.”
Young had three tackles and two quarterback hurries against the Raiders but has yet to get a sack. He set a career high last season with 10.
The Chiefs, though, have allowed an NFLhigh 19 sacks. Coach Andy Reid shouldered some of the blame, saying that he needed to scheme his way around the pressure.
“Just making sure that I’mgiving [Alex Smith] plays that he can get the ball out on time,” Reid said. “That’s the No. 1 thing. I’ve got to do a better job with that.”
If anyone can use the sack, it’s Young.
“That’s definitely not bad news,” Young said. “It just means we gotta be sharp. If you lay down for anybody, they’re going to run you over. We still have to come to play, week in and week out.”
