Two-QB scheme works well for Ohio St.

-

J.T. Barrett ran for three touchdowns and Ezekiel Elliott for two more, Cardale Jones passed for 291 yards and two other scores and No. 1 Ohio State pulled away from Maryland 49-28 on Saturday in Columbus, Ohio.

Buckeyes coach Urban Meyer used Jones to drive the team down the field, then replaced him with Barrett on most plays in the red zone. He used a similar strategy with Tim Tebow in his days with Florida.

Ohio State (6-0, 2-0 Big Ten) found itself in a 21-21 tie in the third quarter before shaking free of the Terrapins (2-4, 0-2) and extending the longest winning streak in the country to 19 games.

Perry Hills ran for 170 yards and two touchdowns for Maryland.

Michigan State 31, Rutgers 24

LJ Scott scored the tiebreaking touchdown on a three-yard run with 43 seconds left to help the No. 4 Spartans (6-0, 2-0) slip past the Scarlet Knights (2-3, 0-2) in Piscataway, New Jersey.

Connor Cook threw for 357 yards and two touchdowns for Michigan State. Chris Laviano and Leonte Carroo connected on three scoring passes for Rutgers, but Laviano spiked the ball on fourth down from midfield in the waning seconds to end the Scarlet Knights’ last chance.

Wisconsin 23, Nebraska 21

Rafael Gaglianone made a 46-yard field goal with four seconds left after clanging a 39-yarder off the right upright just more than aminute earlier to lift the Badgers (4-2, 1-1) past the Cornhuskers (2-4, 0-2) in Lincoln, Nebraska. All four of Nebraska’s losses this season have come on the opponent’s final offensive play.

Minnesota 41, Purdue 13

Shannon Brooks ran for 176 yards, including a 71-yard touchdown that fueled a 28-point third quarter, and Mitch Leidner threw two short scoring passes to Brandon Lingen to lead the Golden Gophers (4-2, 1-1) past the Boilermakers (1-5, 0-2) in West Lafayette, Indiana.

Penn State 29, Indiana 7

Christian Hackenberg threw 39-yard touchdown passes to Brandon Polk and Dae Sean Hamilton and ran for two more scores to carry the Nittany Lions (5-1, 2-0) past the Hoosiers (4-2, 0-2) in State College, Pennsylvania.
