SATURDAY7

WAND Shape-shifting LA band Wand recently dropped their third album in just over a year, another breathless sprint of warped psychedelia with no allegiance to any style beyond its own unique strain of wigginess. Leader Cory Hanson continues to exhibit restless creativity and curiosity, and on the new 1000 Days (Drag City) he gleefully digs further into electronics, layering synth lines to gild fuzzed-out guitar reveries. The instrumental “Dovetail” reaches back toward the sound of Kosmische but still sounds contemporary, its bubbling groove fraught with tension as ominous noise slithers and slides over the beats. With each record Hanson’s melodies become more irresistible, sci-fi-inspired hallucinations—sung in a shimmering glam falsetto—about a world in which we’re increasingly powerless. I mostly have no idea what he’s going on about, but as with the title track, the hooks are so strong and the arrangements so beguiling it hardly matters. I don’t know how long Hanson can maintain this crazy growth spurt; for now, though, it’s one of rock’s most exciting rides in a long time. —PETER MARGASAK Perfume and Melkbelly open. 9 PM, Empty Bottle, 1035 N.
