Georgetown’s Yaro could go first to Fire

The Major League Soccer SuperDraft is next Thursday in Baltimore, and with the Fire holding four picks — including the first pick — general manager Nelson Rodriguez and coach Veljko Paunovic will have plenty of options.

Georgetown defender Joshua Yaro, the top collegiate defender, signed a Generation Adidas contract with MLS on Wednesday, making him eligible for the draft. The deal allows underclassmen to sign as professionals but keep their scholarship so they can resume their education if their soccer career doesn’t work out.

Yaro might have made the Fire’s first choice an easy one.

Also on Wednesday, the Fire added a secondround pick (33rd overall) in a deal that sent veteran midfielder Patrick Nyarko to D.C. United. The 29-yearold Nyarko, who had three goals and four assists last season, reportedly requested a trade.

“I have always embraced challenges, and at this particular point in my career, these challenges take me to another city,” Nyarko said in a statement.

Also departing is free agent Jeff Larentowicz, who scored six goals in 29 matches for the Fire last season. He signed with the LA Galaxy.

The Fire lost technical director Brian Bliss on Tuesday after the former interim coach accepted a similar position with Sport- ing Kansas City. A Fire spokesman said there is no timetable to replace Bliss. Rodriguez and Paunovic, who are in Florida for the MLS Combine this weekend, already were expected to make draft decisions before Bliss left.

Fire midfielder Joevin Jones is on the Trinidad and Tobago roster for the Copa America Centenario play-in match against Haiti on Friday in Panama City. The winner advances to the Copa event this summer, which will make a stop in Chicago beginning June 7.

Wolves’ Caron streaking

Wolves right wing Jordan Caron is pursuing the franchise record for consecutive games with a goal after scoring in his fifth in a row Saturday against the Rockford IceHogs.

Caron, who is four games shy of tying Brett Sterling’s team record of nine, was fortunate. He was credited with a goal after an IceHogs player put the puck into an empty net with 55 seconds left in the Wolves’ 2-0 victory.

Caron, who leads the Wolves with 11 goals— nine of which have come in his last 11 games — will get his next chance to extend the streak when the Wolves visit the Texas Stars on Friday.
