Elliott, 20, youngest to win Daytona pole
Chase Elliott put the No. 24 car on the pole for the second consecutive Daytona 500 on Sunday in Daytona Beach, Florida, becoming the youngest driver to start first in the race, which is scheduled for next Sunday.
Elliott, 20, took over the No. 24 car from retired four- time Sprint Cup Series champion Jeff Gordon. He is the son of Hall of Fame driver and two-time-Daytona 500 champion Bill Elliott, who gave him a big embrace after his 196.314 mph run.
Gordon, who won the pole for the race last year, was in the broadcast booth at Daytona International Speedway, calling the action as the No. 24 car went around the track without him for the first time since 1992.
Matt Kenseth will start second. The rest of the field will be set in two qualifying races Thursday.
