Nats’ Roark fans 15 in victory vs. Twins

-

Tanner Roark struck out a career-high 15 batters and allowed two hits in seven innings in a dominating performance that carried the Washington Nationals to a 2-0 victory Saturday against the visiting Minnesota Twins.

Roark (2-2) twice struck out the side and fanned two batters in four other innings. It was only the second time in his 52 career starts that he reached double digits in strikeouts. The other was on July 6, 2014, when he fanned 11 against the San Diego Padres. The 15 strikeouts were more than he totaled in his first three starts.

‘‘On a given day, anybody can be a world-beater,’’ Nationals pitching coach Mike Maddux said. ‘‘Today was Tanner’s day to do that, just to have that special moment.’’

Ryan Zimmerman had a two-run single in the first and Bryce Harper had two doubles for the Nationals, whose 13-4 start under manager Dusty Baker matches the 1981 Montreal Expos and the 2012 Nationals for the best in franchise history.

Indians 10, Tigers 1

Yan Gomes homered and drove in five runs, and Corey Kluber (1-3) yielded a run and two hits and struck out 10 in eight innings as the Cleveland Indians routed the host Detroit Tigers. Kluber had received only three runs of support in his first three starts.

Gomes entered the game hitting .143 with one RBI in his last eight games, but he broke out of his funk with an RBI single in the first, a three-run home run in the third and an RBI double in the seventh.

Yankees 3, Rays 2

Brett Gardner hit a tiebreaking homer with two outs in the ninth inning to lift the New York Yankees past the visiting Tampa Bay Rays. Gardner had tied the score with an RBI single two innings earlier.

Rays left-hander Blake Snell, considered by many to be the top pitching prospect in baseball, allowed one run and two hits, struck out six and walked one in five innings in his major-league debut.

Orioles 8, Royals 3

Chris Davis went 4-for-5 with a homer and three runs scored, Mark Trumbo drove in four runs with two singles and a double, Manny Machado extended his season-opening hitting streak to 16 games and the Baltimore Orioles got four innings of one-hit relief from their bullpen to defeat the host Kansas City Royals.

Blue Jays 9, Athletics 3

Troy Tulowitzki hit two solo homers, Josh Donaldson added a three-run blast and Ezequiel Carrera had four hits and three runs scored to help the Toronto Blue Jays end the visiting Oakland Athletics’ six-game winning streak.
